Come blow your horn — and bang your drum

DOVER — Dover finally is getting its groove back.

It’s been years since the town has had its very own drum and bugle corps, but last year, all of that changed when the American Legion welcomed the New York Skyliners into their post.

Now, the Skyliners are calling Dover their home, and they are reaching out to students at Dover High School and other neighboring communities in hopes of broadening membership, said corps director Ralph Marino.

The Skyliners have been around for 61 years, beginning with their formation in Manhattan. Since then, they have changed homes several times, moving first to the Bronx, then to Garfield, then to Stroudsburg, Pa., and finally last year back to New Jersey.

The Skyliners will be performing all year round in various parades to raise funds, and it even hopes to sponsor its own show at Hamilton Field in Dover this summer.

But what its members are truly practicing for is the championship at the end of next year.

The 2006 repertoire is “Fire in the Sky,” which will include jazz and tango-style tunes as well a twist to Queen’s classic “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
